Preparing for a Smog Test

The pollution standards that the state of California CARB (California Air Resources Board) imposes on car & truck owners can be frustrating, contradictory and sometimes ridiculous. If you want to give yourself the best chance of passing a smog check in California, or you have an older car or truck or think you have a vehicle that may fail, follow these steps to give yourself the best chances to pass.

  1. Make sure your vehicle is running right. Clear the check engine lights, make sure all the vacuum lines and EVAP are connected and in good condition.
  2. Drive your car for 15-20 minutes prior to testing. Drive your car at different speeds and at varying RPMs, this ensures your vehicle is running at optimal temperature. You can coordinate your test time with our office.
  3. Use an additive. Run your car to near empty and add a fuel additive to the empty tank, refill your gas tank and drive it for ~70+ miles. This helps clean carbon deposits throughout the engine, intake and exhaust paths. We have seen this help vehicles pass a smog test on several occasions.
  4. If you’ve recently changed your battery: Drive the car for 100+ miles prior to your smog check. Changing the battery erases a car computer’s memory and the vehicle needs to go through a thorough “Drive Cycle” in order to pass emission monitors.
  5. If your vehicle has been sitting for a while: Get a new tank of gas, change the oil and follow the suggestions above.
